GUM RECESSION – CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS

gum problems

Gum recession is a scary experience. If you're not familiar with it, you might not understand what’s going on when your gums begin to pull away from your teeth.

What exactly is Gum Recession?

Gum recession is a type of gum disease in which the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth. Exposing the roots beneath, increases the vulnerability of your teeth to cavities. When brushing or eating, gum recession can make your teeth more sensitive. It can be a very painful and frustrating problem at times. It can also lead to more serious dental issues.

Gum Recession Causes:

Gum recession is caused by a variety of factors, including:

1.  Periodontal disease: Periodontal diseases are bacterial gum infections that destroy the supporting bone and gum tissue that keep your teeth in place. It is one of the most common causes of gum recession.

2.  Brushing aggressively: Brushing your teeth too hard or in the wrong way can cause the enamel on your teeth to wear away, causing gums to recede.

3.  Inadequate dental care: Inadequate brushing, flossing, and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash allows plaque to harden into calculus (tartar), which leads to gum recession.

4.  Hormonal changes: Changes in female hormone levels, such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, occur throughout a woman's life, making gums more sensitive and vulnerable to gum recession.

5.  Tobacco products: They can leave sticky plaque on teeth that is difficult to remove, eventually leading to gum recession.

6.  Grinding and clenching your teeth: Constantly grinding and clenching your teeth can wear down gum tissue and cause receding gums.

7.  Crooked teeth or a misaligned bite: Improper bite can also put undue strain on gum tissue, causing it to recede over time.

8.  Lip or tongue piercing: Even relatively harmless body piercings can cause gum recession. Jewelry that rubs against the gums can cause irritation and wear and tear.

Gum Recession Symptoms:

ü  Gum recession causes your teeth to appear longer than they used to because the gum tissue that once covered the tooth roots has receded, exposing more of the tooth.

ü  You may also notice a wider gap between your teeth as a result of gum tissue loss, which can cause your teeth to shift slightly. The longer the recession is left untreated, the more cosmetic damage it can cause.

ü  Sensitivity to cold and heat is another symptom of gum recession, which occurs because the tooth roots are now exposed and unprotected. Because the nerves in the tooth roots are so sensitive, temperature changes can easily irritate them.

ü  Gums are bleeding more than usual.

What Happens If Gum Recession Is Left Untreated?

Patients frequently believe that gum recession is unimportant because there is no visible infection and it rarely causes pain. Gum recession, on the other hand, can be disastrous to your oral health. This is how.

·         Root exposure - Enamel is the hardest substance your body can produce. It protects your teeth, allowing us to eat a variety of hard and sticky foods. It also helps to prevent cavities. The roots of your teeth, however, are not protected by enamel beneath the surface of the gums. When the roots are exposed, decay can occur quickly, necessitating costly and painful procedures such as root canals.

·         Sensitivity - As previously stated, sensitivity to hot and cold foods exists. This is caused by the nerve endings in the root being exposed.

·         Gum disease And Tooth loss - One of the most dangerous causes of gum recession is gum disease (periodontal disease). Some patients experiencing recession are actually experiencing bone damage as a result of chronically inflamed and infected gum and bone. If left untreated, this can result in tooth loss.

Invisalign aligners are clear braces trays that fit over your teeth. They can be used for straightening teeth or closing gaps between them, and they’re made from a special plastic material that won’t stain or wear down easily. When should I get one of these procedures done? A lot of people think that root canals only need to be done when there is an infection in the pulp, but this isn’t true! Root canals can also help prevent future infections by cleaning out bacteria before they start growing again. There are many reasons why someone might need an alignment - crooked teeth,

Rootcanal treatment in children

Root canal treatment is used to remove infected pulp from the inside of a tooth of a kid . The pulp is the soft tissue in the middle of the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. The procedure involves removing the affected pulp and disinfecting and filling the empty root canal system. Afterward, the tooth is sealed with a crown or similar restoration.

When to consider a root canal procedure

- Severe dental pain that keeps you up at night or wakes you up from sleep.

- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures or liquids that lasts for several days after exposure to stimuli.

- Swelling or tenderness in your gums near the painful tooth.

Dental care should be a top priority for everyone.

Taking care of your teeth is not just about avoiding cavities, but also about keeping your mouth clean and odor-free. A healthy mouth means a healthy body. Studies show that dental health is an important indicator of overall health. There are several ways to combat gum disease and maintain proper dental hygiene. One method is to receive regular dental exams from your dentist, who will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. If you are experiencing any signs or symptoms of a problem, such as swollen gums, bleeding gums or sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages, it's essential to see your dentist as soon as possible for an evaluation.

Another way to combat gum disease is through good oral hygiene habits at home. Brush twice each day with fluoride toothpaste and floss every night before bedtime. Replace your toothbrush every three months or so, and use an interdental brush to clean between teeth once per day.

Finally, avoid foods that can stain teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine and berries. If you smoke cigarettes or chew tobacco products (including chewing gum), talk with your dentist about quitting these habits to improve the overall health of your mouth. A Healthy Mouth Is A Few Simple Steps Away!

Teeth help us to chew and digest food. They help us to talk, and to pronounce different sounds clearly. Finally, teeth help to give our face its shape. A healthy smile can be a great asset; and because this is so important, it makes sense to give your teeth the best care possible.

The good news is maintaining a healthy mouth only requires a few minutes of your time daily.
✓ Brushing for 2 minutes effectively, twice daily is mandatory.
✓ A great way to improve gum health is to massage them with a clean finger, this improves blood circulation.
✓ Rinsing your mouth vigorously with water after all meals, snacks and even beverages helps minimize food accumulation and staining.
✓ Smoking is bad for you and for your teeth, as are other tobacco products.
Visiting the dentist once a year should be part of your routine, and your doctor can help further educate and encourage you, on how to maintain your teeth for life.
